Despite all the compact performance cars out there, somehow it seemed that BMW M2 filled an empty space when it was presented in 2016. Although BMW never really said it like that, the M2 is an indirect successor to the lovely 1M, but it is also on a whole new level, not just in terms of power, but also drivability.
The stock car comes with the N55 B30T0 3L I6 engine which produces 272 kW from 6500 rpm and 465 Nm of torque from 1450 to 4750 rpm, with an overboost option that gives up to 500 Nm of torque. The wonderfully wide torque curve ensures you can always be in the best rpm to employ all the twisting force whenever you press the pedal to the metal. The engine comes paired with either a lightning fast 7-speed dual-clutch or, for the more traditional among you, with a precise 6-speed manual. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds (4.5 for the manual). It tops out at electronically limited 250 km/h or 270 km/h if you opt for the M Driver’s pack..
Yes, we can remove either of those limitations with our chiptuning.
While there are a number of upgrades that we can and will recommend for this vehicle, this particular article will focus on the available upgrades for the intake section. We will discuss a few different options that vary in performance, design and price. This will give you a full overview of the options and help you choose the best fit for your desires and budget.
The main division between the options comes down to your choice between an air filter or a full intake system.
A good replacement filter (we will usually recommend BMC sports filters) will cost just a few hundred dollars and while it will do its job perfectly, no filter can compete with a full intake neither in terms of performance, nor looks.
If your budget allows it, we would always recommend a full intake for a performance vehicle such as yours. If not, a good replacement filter will do just fine.
Here are the options below.
As already mentioned, our recommendation of a replacement filter for this vehicle would be a BMC sports filter. This is the most common budget option we sell alongside chiptuning.
BMC code: FB740/20
This filter is installed in the original filter box on the M2. However, it enables improved air flow while at the same time improving filtration.
This filter is the most affordable option and we offer FREE installation when purchased alongside our ECU Tune. Moreover, this filter does not need to be replaced every time you have the vehicle serviced. All you need to do is wash it with a special detergent and oil again and it can be reused.
Aftermarket full intakes are designed to improve air flow and provide the engine with more cold air without compromising (actually, usually improving) filtration. This usually brings more power, a better throttle response, a change in intake sound and also in some cases an improvement in the look under the bonnet.
Here are a few options to choose from, depending on your budget and preference.
The first option is the Magnum FORCE Stage 2 kit made by aFe POWER. In the airflow test performed by the aFe, this kit out performed the factory system every time.
This filtration system can also be cleaned and reused many times over. It also requires no messy cutting or drilling for installation.
The 7” Pro 5R filter included in this system has 5 layers, each finer than the previous to offer 360 degree, top-notch filtration.
One step up in terms of price and you find the Momentum Carbon Fiber intake, a stunning visual upgrade, albeit with a somewhat lower airflow increase. The manufacturer claims 10% improvement in airflow over the OEM option F87 M2 System.
Using the same filter as the previous version, the Momentum Carbon Fiber intake can also be cleaned and reused and its installation is also devoid of any need for cutting into the OEM setup.
At the very top of the offer there is this stunning Eventuri Full Carbon intake. Each part is meticulously designed for the best of performance yet ensuring airflow with minimal restrictions, great filtration properties and a heat shield that keeps the high engine bay temperatures away from the filter. It employs Eventuri’s patented housing for the best airflow from the filter.
Its unique properties improve throttle response, torque in low and mid rpm and the overall power.
However, this is not all. It also makes a difference in intake sound and, while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we’d argue it looks a lot better than any other intake option for the BMW M2 F87 (Note: also suits the F2X M135i/M235i).
Of course, each of these systems will give the best performance when coupled with our tailored software upgrade. It will make the best use of the added capability and give your BMW M2 a noticeable improvement in performance without compromising on safety or durability.
